Sunday, December 21, 2003Supreme Bday SQUID
This Saturday was spicysquid's big 26th bday extravaganza. A great time was had by all! We had an awesome potluck at Jeff's apartment. The potluck food ranged from Italian, Chinese, and French cuisine with a full-blown turkey (that was unfortunately not touched).
Most notably, Bernie brought over a gas grill and crepe batter in order to make us fresh crepe's. In a word, they were magnifique!
After stuffing ourselves with food, including:
Hong Kong Flower Lounge: o Crab Vermicelli o Walnut Prawns o Peking Duck
Bucca di Beppo o Italian Macaroni of some kind
Capital King Eggroll o Eggrolls
Chicken * 2
And lots more (which I can't remember off the time of my head)....
Dennis then popped in a DVD that he made using a mixture of MAC & Windows tools for the Grand Canyon trip. It was incredible and really showed the quality 27 hours that he spent putting the thing together. There was musical accompanyment and zoom in as well as sub-titles that really captured the ethos of the trip.
After the DVD, we pulled our traditional b-day prank which was headed by the venerable Google Suzuya.
The idea was to put in letters (which were candy) into a whip cream pie and have Tom try to figure out what his gift was. The letters were DVD-RW 4x FROM SB. Unfortunately, Jeff tried to help Tom hold back his hair only to get smacked with the pie. It was quite an interesting and effective counter attack if you ask me.
Then there was ice cream cake and Sheng Kee cake and then a game of white elephant.
Highlights: ======= This was my first white elephant game, so it was really fun to see the rampant stealing of good gifts from people and their sad bereft expressions. Ethel, in particular, got the short end of the stick. She started with a Best Buy GC, then moved onto a Starbucks GC, only to end up with a 12 pack of Trojan condoms and KY liquid. Other runner ups for funniest/worst gifts included: A set of Hannukah candles, a set of animal candles, and a Gigli DVD, and a Freddy Got Fingered DVD.
Following the gift exchange, the room then broke up in halves playing a game of Taboo and puppet balloon making. Juliet taught me how to a dog from the balloon.
Finally, after the cleanup, Chao, Jeff, James, Ginger, Tom, and I played low-stakes hold-em poker. Good times, good times!

Yahoo!
So Jerry Yang made me a sandwich the other day at Yahoo! He tried to get out of it by asking for a break, but the bosswoman was like it's not your break man-- it's your coworkers break!
It was a great gesture, all the execs (CFO, CEO, COO, founders) were making food, ringing the register, or acting as dieticians for us in the cafeteria as part of a bet they had made for the Yahoos breaking the world record on the number of simultaneous yodels.
Other cool things that the founders do? Well last week we got our Y! gift from the founders personally. Jerry & David stop by each of the cubes handing out presents. My present? A really comfy Y! blanket-- really good quality.
I'm starting with a new group now and my code actually handles $$ now. It's very exciting to know that your work actually impacts the bottom line. I'm also helping with the smallbusiness business control panel and the main page which really cool as well because it's the first thing people see when they hit the property.
Big changes at the end of the year! Great things to look forward to :)

Dentists
As of this Saturday, I now have cosmetic white fillings instead of silver!
The procedure was fairly smooth and I'm kind of amazed that I've found a dentist that is actually nice and doesn't try to torture his patients (too much).
Speaking of torture, I used to go to a Chinese dentist (which will remain unnamed) who was pretty bad!
(Me): Uhm..I don't think the novocaine has... (Dentist): (Dentist grabs pliers and yanks on tooth) (Me): OUCH!!!! STOP STOP!! OH GOD PLEASE STOP! (Dentist): Don't worry the tooth is half out. Just a little more. (Me): No no please...(*sees white for a second*) (Dentist): Woops, looks like some of the root is still in there. (digs around) (Me): Kill me please.
This time the dentists at Milpitas Dental Center made the experience fairly good. I had asked to replace some of my fillings with white fillings.
Things were going great but there was just one minor mishap. I think it went something like:
(Dentist): Whoops it looks like my drill bit got a bit of your lip. It seems to be bleeding. (Me): (in muffled tones) Uhm...what? What drill? (Dentist): Oh the one I use to remove your fillings. (Me): Is it a big gash? (Dentist): Nah, it's not too bad (makes a gesture with his finger) (Me): Oh so it'll heal fine? (Dentist): Well, actually because its in your lip it'll take a long time to heal. We'll just finish drilling. (Me): Kill me please.

Website was down and photos were eaten
Gah!
The website was down for a bit and some of the photos had been eaten. I've tried to salvage what I can, the rest will need to be reposted :(.
Aside from technical difficulties, the last twenty days have had a lot of big changes, at Y! and in my personal life.
