Tuesday, October 25, 2005Investment bankers and lawyers
So I've got this idea for a company...
But while I have the manpower and technical competency to build it, I'm fairly certain that I'll need partners with in-depth knowledge about corporate law, specifically ones that are familiar with securities law and investment banking.
Aside from this obvious hurdle, I have a few other serious concerns as well. A startup venture like mine would probably involve lots of blood, sweat and tears; no money for six months probably, and worst of all has a much higher chance of failure than success. I'm talking 1/100 or 1/1000 startups make it and maybe 1/100,000 are as successful as I'd want to believe this company could be.
As for failure, most startups fail from a lack of proper initial funding, improper management, or a poor fundamental business model. Unfortunately, I can't really say that this venture on paper doesn't currently suffer from at least two of those three issues.
Somehow before this company sees the light of day, I'll need to resolve at least 2 of the three issues concretely. Most importantly, I'll need partners that have strengths where I have weaknesses. In this case, domain knowledge that I am lacking altogether.
I need to do more research. I was digging around and found that I should probably read Guy Kawasaki's book entitled, "The Art of the Start". I think I'd better spend at least a few nights at the library or bookstore. I really need to research a lot more on the topic and give a lot of serious thought about whether this is really for me.
Maybe I'll buy some books and read them when I'm in Calistoga this weekend. Reading while soaking in a nice mineral hot spring would probably be really relaxing. I'll need the relaxation. My deadline for this month is rapidly approaching, so I'm really looking forward to the weekend. By then, the deadline will be over and I can't think of a better way to unwind...
