Oh I totally forgot to blog about the Dixie Chick concert and my $157 net winnings from Vegas :)
We got excellent front row (3rd row from the stage) seats to the Dixie Chicks concert maybe less than 10 feet from the stage. I didn't know any of the songs, but Wendy really enjoyed herself :)
As for my winnings, I think my training with that Beach Volleyball game really helped. Trying to get all the accessories for the girl characters in that game, really fine tuned my gambling skills.
I think the fact that I didn't play too much helped also. I tried to leave the tables whenever I was up $100, so I actually didn't lose anything in blackjack. Most of my losses were on slot machines and video poker.
Towards the end of the trip, Wendy and I started playing penny and nickel slots and lost 5 bucks doing that. I think those coin-fed machines have the worst odds in Vegas. Anyways, I ended up gambling for maybe 3 hours total, but came away from Vegas a winner :) :)

Greymatter or Movable Type
Honestly, I'm not entirely impressed with Movable Type especially since I've already grown accustomed to Greymatter. Does anyone know any good Movable Type blog skins out there? I kind of like the Greymatter blogskin that I have right now.
Anyhow my movable type blog needs a new skin. Perhaps I should make my own new skin, but that's so much work! Gah!
posted @ 03:08 PM PST [link]Tuesday, July 29, 2003I'm very worried about my life as a coder
More and more articles about outsourcing are being written everyday. Today for instance, there was this article on My Yahoo! that forecast 1:10 ratio of software jobs to be moved abroad by the end of 2004. It's not a far stretch then to say that in 2010 that maybe 60% of the software jobs will have been moved abroad.
So where does that leave me career wise? Perhaps I should start thinking about law school again. You know the idea of becoming a lawyer keeps digging at me. I don't know why I would even want to go there. I just see it as a position of power, with a big paycheck and lots of respect. Is that a good reason to pursue a field that I know absolutely nothing about? I mean I went into CS knowing very little about it as well! It was more of a mix of parents desires and the fact that I liked to play MUD games and talk on IRC.
The honest truth is that I'm scared of doing law, because I know I have a certain aptitude in computer science that can at least put food on the table. With law, I don't know if I'd even be able to get a job. I mean I'm not exactly a prototypical lawyer in that I'm neither white, nor white-washed asian. On top of that, I honestly have no clue what lawyering entails.
Right now, I envision my future life as a simple engineer with a nice family and flexible well-paying job. But with outsourcing becoming prevalent, engineers like myself could experience the effects of a world economy where each country's labor rates are not equal. Assuming that the labor supplies in each country can provide equivalent goods and that the sunk cost of moving your operations to geographic location is small in comparison to relative savings, then wages in country USA will go down as a result of oversupply of labor.
Dude that will suck.

Hmmm...sleepy
Its Tue. 3:39pm and I'm sleepy. I think I'm going to buy 3 things for my cube:
1. an MP3 player/fix my LCD on my laptop. 2. a cot for me to sleep on when I'm tired + nice ergo pillow + thermal blanket. 3. portable airconditioner for the weekends when it gets too hot.

I've migrated my blog to moveable type!
To see it visit here:
Movable Type version of my blog! It took a while to get the settings right since I had to familiarize with way the axiosym server had its mysql configuration, but the fruit of my labors has arrived.
I'm still deciding on layout for the thing, and prior to that I guess I'll just update both blogs. I've stopped updated the csua blog altogether. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing...
