Thursday, July 1, 2004Microsoft's belated entrance into online algorithmic search
It looks like Microsoft's search engine is a bit lopsided-- oversampling websites to the point where it drowns out other search results and tends to return different rank (poorer IMO) results as compared to Google/Yahoo.
Also the site, albeit in beta mode, is very slow (new searches can take 1+ sec).
But... this is what's come to be expected of MS software in general-- I'm just happy it doesn't crash my browser :)
In true Microsoft spirit, MSN search does a nearly direct lift of the UI from Google, the only difference being that they didn't wrap the text properly & don't have the Google logo.
Again, the biggest gripe is that they rank differently-- my blog is ranked 5th on their crawlers vs 1st for Google/Yahoo. :(
In some cases, top results from Google/Yahoo don't even show up at all on MSN first 20 links. In the search below. MSN's top result in this case results in a 404 (site not found)!!!

Update [7/18]: Looks like they fixed the link above. And I'm now ranked first. Ok I'm happy :D
