Looking back
When I look back just a few years, the job market was terrible and I was just starting out. Man those days were so rough. I had such a hard time finding a real job but kept working internships here and there. I must have spent at least a year and a half working at Brocade and Sun Microsystems after graduation. There were times when I really questioned whether engineering was right for me at all, whether I needed to just go into another vocation to remain competitive.
Then I took a job at this startup Avalent and worked on embedded software. Primarily I ported uClinux (micro-see linux) onto their new boards, wrote device drivers, worked on JTAG debuggers, toolchains etc. and did a complete overhaul on their website in my spare time, it used to look like this when i joined. I spent like 1-2 half days on it cause I was supposed to be doing other work, but had suggested taking on refreshing the website.
On the bright side it was roughly around the same time that I started this blog and photo gallery (coincidence? I think not :-))
The funniest thing is that most if not all the non-spec related copy on that text I pretty much made up from scratch. What makes me laugh even harder is that the copy has somehow found its way into a pdf on the site now (ROFL).
Thinking back, even the coworker giving the lecture in one of the photos had long since left months before the site had even been made. Allen & I were laughing so hard when I showed him some of the photos on that site (as were some other folks @ the company). Anyhow you should ask us sometime about AvaCore & AvaSoft...
Years later, I'm still at Y! working for Photos now. In the prior years @ Y!, I've done everything from pieces of online commerce, hosting, domains, billing, ordering to developing automated SOX consistency programs for massively distributed systems.
Man what a trip...at the end of the day I think I'm still the same guy that was struggling just a few years back. I was rummaging through my archives and found something that still resonates with me and I felt like resurfacing it. Here's a blast from the past.

Health insurance
Thought: How can you save-for/maintain health insurance after retirement?
http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/Insurance/Insureyourhealth/P146464.asp?GT1=7918
Not offered yet @ my company, but I hope they do soon, cause healthy folks in their 20's & 30's would flock to a program like this.
No answers from google answers yet.
Here's an idea of current costs.
Something that I need to think and plan for about along with downpayment, children's education, retirement...
