09/24/2006: "Thoughts about social networking sites"
I finally buckled down and wanted to see what social networking sites were doing these days that justified their mucho mucho valuations:
So I started a simple myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/stevelin97
First thoughts are-- damn it's a helluva lot harder to navigate and much more cluttered than friendster/Y! 360/facebook, though somewhat faster than where friendster was a while back.
I hate the layouts and the muchas ads all over the place. Especially in the owner view...
Finally, it's not clear how to make connections immediately.
In this respect, the next contender was far superior. I started a facebook page:
http://berkeley.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1245591
The site has an extremely streamlined and elegant interface and no annoying ads. All the real estate is used for very simple additions of information. In fact, creating a facebook page was super easy with the assistance of auto-fill for common fields like school name, major, etc. Moreover, it automatically created an association via the college that you were in. The only downside is that it doesn't have the equivalent of a "pretty" url system. But aside from this, I'm very amazed by the quick and unlimited photos system as well as the rest of the design of the site. Very very good indeed.
Finally 360. Read more about 360 in the link below, I wish the links were more uniform:
