01/13/2006: "No sleep for the wicked"
Duke has been keeping me up for a few weeks now. Last night (this morning?) around 4am, Wendy took him out for a potty break and he started barking at nothing at all. He's a cute dog and fun to play with when he's good, but when he's evil... Well let's just say that in the short time we were with Wendy's parents they began calling him "naughty stompy".
Anyhow, I wasn't able to sleep after I was woken up, so since then I kept myself somewhat busy surfing the web.
First I looked at some apartments on housingmaps both for rent and to buy. I'm not sure why I even look at the "to buy" section. In the Bay Area, the near-term benefits of renting far outweigh buying. That led to a whole train of thought on why the hell I'm considering buying anything in the Bay Area. So I started looking at properties in San Diego, Hawaii, Thailand, etc. After half an hour scrounging around on websites where 200k-300k condos in paradise seemed cheap, I started thinking: How am I going to pay for a place in Hawaii if I'm working in the Bay Area. Durh...
A quick search on the Hawaii job boards showed very meager pickings for software engineers. I wish Y! would open up an office there or somewhere tropical/near a decent beach w/real estate prices somewhat lower than the Bay Area maybe Baja California.
Haha while I'm on the wish list, I wish I won the lottery and could just move to Hawaii and be a beach bum.
Maybe I could convince Wendy that renting here and purchasing in Hawaii would be a smart move.
Anyhow, I got somewhat bored and ran across the infamous article on Google's PageRank algorithm. I've almost entirely forgotten about some of the math they discuss, had to reference wikipedia.
But it's pretty cool that these guys methodically thought about search engines and made good on their ideas. While I'll admit that profitability may not have been part of their original paper, it's still nice to know that following your own passions and drives can lead you to success.

Yeah trulia is great, still not as good (or stable!) as mlslistings-- but the UI is slick.
As for renting, unfortunately I think it varies from place to place. Relatively (bay area) speaking, most of the other areas will carry a higher rent/price ratio than here.
